Overview

Line Marking in Godalming

Looking to have lines marked in Godalming? London Tar covers Godalming and the whole of Surrey.

Good markings make a site safer and keep traffic and people moving in the right places. London Tar lays hard-wearing thermoplastic in Godalming and right across Surrey, on car parks, private roads, warehouses, playgrounds and sports courts. Thermoplastic grips the surface firmly and stays easy to see under heavy traffic for much longer than conventional paint.

That durability under traffic makes it the standard for car parks, roads and industrial floors. Your layout is set out on site before anything is applied, so you can see how it will look, and the lines and symbols are then laid crisp and accurate in the colours you require.

What’s included

  • Bays and disabled bays, arrows and hatching in car parks
  • Give-way markings, centre lines and edge lines on roads

FAQs

Line Marking FAQs

How long do the markings take to dry?

Thermoplastic sets in minutes as it cools, so most areas are usable the same day, with timings confirmed on site. Paint takes a little longer: a typical road paint data sheet gives touch dry at 5 to 10 minutes and fully dry at 15 to 20 minutes in 15°C. It should not go down below 5°C, the sheet says, or when the surface is under 3°C above dew point.

Can you refresh faded markings without resurfacing?

Yes, when the surface is sound. The area is cleaned, the layout set out, and new lines laid over the old ones without resurfacing. It is worth setting out from the correct layout rather than tracing faded lines. Cracks and potholes shorten the life of new markings, so repair them first. Signs that markings need refreshing include cars parking over lines and worn walkways or disabled symbols.

Why thermoplastic rather than paint?

Thermoplastic lasts longer where traffic is heavy. It bonds firmly when laid hot and copes with freeze and thaw, and industry guides estimate about 5 to 7 years in normal UK conditions. Painted lines on busy or exposed car parks often fade after about two winters. Paint is cheaper at the start, around half the cost, which is why it still suits low-traffic areas and multi-storey or underground car parks, where water-based paint is the norm.

What colours and symbols can you mark?

Bays, arrows, hatching and disabled bays form the core of most car park jobs, and private roads take centre lines, edge lines and give-way markings. If you are adding charging points, EV bays can be marked green with a white EV symbol, in line with PAS 1899 as reported. Logistics sites get pedestrian walkways and safety zones, and schools get games and court lines. Colours are confirmed at set-out.

Do you mark warehouse floors and playgrounds?

Yes. Walkways and safety zones on warehouse floors give staff a clear route around vehicle movements, and HSE guidance says crossing points should be suitably marked and signposted. Schools commission playground games and sports-court lines. The surface comes first: graphics are laid on the existing macadam, so cracks or potholes need repairing beforehand. Since the work needs a dry surface above about 5°C, spring or summer holidays are the natural time.

What size should disabled and EV bays be in a private car park?

Surrey County Council guidance gives a standard perpendicular bay of 2.4m by 4.8m and a disabled bay of 2.8m by 4.8m, with a 1.2m gap where two disabled bays sit side by side, referencing Approved Document M. For EV bays, PAS 1899:2022 is reported to recommend 2.4m by 4.8m, or 3.6m by 5.0m with a 1.2m clear zone if accessible. The layout is marked out on site, so you can measure before marking.

How much does car park line marking cost in Godalming?

Price depends on your site, so it is set after a free site survey in Godalming, and you receive a clear, itemised quote. Expect it to reflect the number of bays and symbols and the length of lining, whether lines are new or a refresh, the material (thermoplastic is roughly double the cost of water-based paint, say industry guides), removing old markings, and access.

Can old markings be removed if we change the car park layout?

Yes. Old lines are dealt with during surface preparation, before the new layout is applied. One method specialists use is hydroblasting. Removing them prevents confusion for drivers and stops the old layout being traced by mistake. A change of layout often follows adding EV or disabled bays, and guides warn against keeping a layout only because it has always been there. You see the new layout marked out first.

Can line marking go straight onto new tarmac?

Generally not at once. A typical road paint data sheet says new asphalt needs at least 15 days before marking, and one or two weeks more in cold or damp weather. Dirty or damp surfaces and low application temperatures are common reasons markings fall off, and skipping preparation can halve their life. London Tar also lays tarmac, so the timing for new surfacing can be discussed at the survey.

How long does thermoplastic line marking last?

About 5 to 7 years under normal UK conditions is the figure industry guides give for thermoplastic, and one manufacturer claims 8 years or more. It wears quicker in some places: where heavy vehicles run, where traffic stops, turns or queues, and where oil spills, frost, UV or pressure washing reach it. A cracked surface cuts life too. Turning areas and entrances usually show wear first.

How can I check a line marking quote will get the layout right?

Ask whether the quote is based on a survey and whether it itemises bays, symbols, line lengths, material and old-line removal. Most line marking complaints are about set-out rather than materials, from bays marked too narrow to lines traced from an old faded layout. London Tar offers a free site survey and an itemised quote, and marks the agreed layout out on site so you can check it first.
