Overview

Line Marking across Surrey

Well-marked bays, arrows and walkways make any site safer and easier to get around. London Tar lays durable thermoplastic line marking across Surrey on car parks, private roads, warehouse floors, playgrounds and sports courts. Because thermoplastic fuses firmly to the surface, it keeps its colour under heavy traffic for far longer than standard paint.

Thermoplastic is the usual choice for car parks, roads and industrial floors because it copes with constant wheels and footfall. Your layout is marked out on site first, so you see exactly where everything will go, and only then are the lines and symbols laid, sharp and accurate, in whichever colours the site needs.

What’s included

  • Parking bays, direction arrows, hatched areas and disabled bays
  • Centre lines, edge lines and give-way markings on roads

How we work

From survey to finished surface

  1. 1

The layout is agreed with you, then marked out on the ground so you can see it before any material goes down.

  2. 2

    Surface prep

We clean the surface and deal with old, worn lines so the new marking grips as it should.

  3. 3

    Application

Thermoplastic or spray is applied in clean, even lines, in the colours your site needs.

  4. 4

    Check and open up

The markings cure fast, which normally means the area is back in use on the same day.

Pricing

How much does line marking cost?

Prices follow a free site survey, and these are the things that make the biggest difference:

FAQs

Line Marking FAQs

How long do the markings take to dry?

Thermoplastic cools and sets within minutes, so most areas can reopen the same day, with timings confirmed on site. Paint takes a little longer: a typical road paint data sheet gives 5 to 10 minutes to touch dry and 15 to 20 minutes to fully dry at 15°C. The same sheet says not to apply it below 5°C, or when the surface is within 3°C of the dew point.

Can you refresh faded markings without resurfacing?

Yes, as long as the surface underneath is sound. Once the area is cleaned, the lines can be re-marked over the old ones, set out from the layout you agreed rather than simply traced from faded marks. Cracks, potholes and poor preparation are named causes of early wear, so a damaged surface is better repaired first. London Tar also lays tarmac and repairs potholes, so that can be dealt with at the same time.

Why thermoplastic rather than paint?

Thermoplastic lasts much longer under traffic. It is laid hot, bonds firmly to the surface and, according to industry guides, typically lasts about 5 to 7 years in normal UK conditions, where standard paint on a busy or exposed car park often manages about two winters. Thermoplastic costs roughly twice as much as water-based paint at the outset, but repeated repainting can cost more over a decade. Paint still suits quiet, indoor or multi-storey sites.

What colours and symbols can you mark?

Most of what a commercial site needs: parking bays, direction arrows, hatched zones, disabled bays, give-way markings, and centre and edge lines on private roads. EV bays are usually marked in green with a white EV symbol, following PAS 1899 as reported. Indoors, warehouse walkways and safety zones help keep staff clear of vehicle routes, and schools can add playground games and sports-court lines. The colours for your site are agreed at set-out.

Do you mark warehouse floors and playgrounds?

Yes. On warehouse and logistics floors, walkways and safety zones help keep staff apart from vehicle routes, and HSE guidance says crossing points should be suitably marked and signposted. For schools, thermoplastic games and court lines go onto the existing macadam, so cracks and potholes are repaired first. Contractors generally need a dry surface above about 5°C, which makes spring and summer holidays the usual window for playground work.

What size should disabled and EV bays be in a private car park?

Surrey County Council guidance recommends perpendicular standard bays of 2.4m by 4.8m and disabled bays of 2.8m by 4.8m, with a 1.2m gap between two disabled bays. BS 8300, as reported, gives 2,400mm by 4,800mm with 1,200mm access zones at the sides and rear. For EV bays, PAS 1899:2022 is reported to suggest 3.6m by 5.0m for accessible ones. Seeing the layout marked out on site before anything is applied lets you check the bays against these figures.

How much does car park line marking cost in Surrey?

The price depends on the size and layout of the car park, so every job is quoted after a free site survey. The main drivers are the number of bays, symbols and metres of line, whether the markings are new or a refresh over faded ones, thermoplastic or paint (industry guides put thermoplastic at roughly twice the material cost), old-line removal, and site access. You then get a clear, itemised quote for your site in Surrey.

Can old markings be removed if we change the car park layout?

Yes. Dealing with old markings is part of the surface preparation before a new layout goes down. Specialists use methods such as hydroblasting to take lines off. It matters because leftover lines confuse drivers, and guides list keeping an existing layout simply because it has always been there as a common mistake. Layout changes often come up when adding EV or disabled bays, and the new plan is marked out on site for you to see first.

Can line marking go straight onto new tarmac?

Not always on the day it is laid. A typical paint data sheet says to wait at least 15 days before marking new asphalt, and one or two weeks more in cold or damp weather. Markings come off early when they go onto a dirty or damp surface, and one industry guide says skipping preparation can halve their life. London Tar lays tarmac as well, so the timing for a newly surfaced site can be talked through at the survey.

How long does thermoplastic line marking last?

Industry guides put thermoplastic at about 5 to 7 years under normal UK conditions, and one manufacturer claims 8 years or more against 1 to 2 years for conventional paint. Real life depends on use: heavy vehicles, turning and queuing areas, oil spills, frost, pressure washing and cracks in the surface all shorten it. Entrances and turning points usually wear first, so they are the places to check.

How can I check a line marking quote will get the layout right?

Make sure the quote follows a proper look at the site and spells out what is being marked. Most complaints about line marking are about setting out: bays too narrow, or new lines traced from old faded ones. With London Tar, a free site survey comes first, you get a clear, itemised quote, and the layout is marked out on site so you can check bay sizes before anything is applied.
