Overview

Line Marking in Oxted

Want line marking in Oxted? London Tar covers Oxted, and all of Surrey besides.

On a well-marked site, drivers know where to park and pedestrians know where to walk, which keeps everyone safer. London Tar applies thermoplastic line marking in Oxted and across Surrey to car parks, private roads, warehouses, playgrounds and sports courts. Once laid, it is fixed hard to the surface and outlasts ordinary paint by a wide margin under heavy traffic.

Since it holds up to traffic, thermoplastic is what most car parks, roads and industrial floors use. Nothing is applied until your layout has been marked out on the ground and you have seen it, after which the lines and symbols go down with clean edges, accurately and in the colours needed.

What’s included

  • Arrows, hatching, parking bays and disabled bays
  • Give-way, centre and edge lines on roads
  • Safety zones and walkways on warehouse floors
  • Playground games and court lines for sport

How we work

From survey to finished surface

  1. 1

    Set out

First the layout is agreed, then it is marked out on site for you to see before anything is applied.

  2. 2

    Surface prep

Next the surface is cleaned and worn markings are dealt with, which helps the new lines take hold.

  3. 3

    Application

Thermoplastic or spray is then put down in a crisp, even line and the colours you need.

  4. 4

    Check and open up

Curing is quick, so the area can usually be opened up later that same day.

FAQs

Line Marking FAQs

How long do the markings take to dry?

Thermoplastic hardens in minutes as it cools, which is why most areas reopen the same day; the exact timings are confirmed on site. Paint behaves differently: one typical data sheet lists 5 to 10 minutes until touch dry and 15 to 20 minutes until fully dry at 15°C, and rules out application below 5°C or with the surface less than 3°C above dew point.

Can you refresh faded markings without resurfacing?

In many car parks, yes. The test is whether the surface underneath is sound: if it is, cleaning and a fresh set-out are enough before new lines go over the old. The new marking should follow the correct layout rather than whatever has faded, or errors get repeated. Cracks and potholes undermine new lines, so mend them first. One guide suggests busy commercial car parks may need refreshing every 1 to 3 years.

Why thermoplastic rather than paint?

The reason is life under traffic. Laid hot, thermoplastic fuses to the surface and, as the Traffic Signs Manual explains, gets its night-time reflectivity from glass beads held within the material. Industry guides estimate 5 to 7 years in normal UK conditions for beaded thermoplastic, whereas ordinary paint on a heavily used car park is often finished after two winters. Paint is about half the price, so it can be right for quiet or indoor spaces.

What colours and symbols can you mark?

Managing agents and site operators typically need parking bays, disabled bays, arrows and hatched areas, along with give-way markings and centre and edge lines where there are private roads. Electric vehicle bays can carry the green surface and white EV symbol reported under PAS 1899. Inside buildings, walkways and safety zones are marked on warehouse floors, and schools can add playground games and sports-court lines. Colours are agreed during set-out.

Do you mark warehouse floors and playgrounds?

Yes. Inside warehouses, marked walkways and safety zones show staff where to walk among vehicle routes, and HSE guidance calls for crossing points to be suitably marked and signposted. On school sites, games and court lines are laid on the playground's existing macadam, so its condition is checked and any cracks or potholes are repaired first. With a dry surface above about 5°C generally needed, holiday weeks in spring or summer are ideal.

What size should disabled and EV bays be in a private car park?

The figures in Surrey County Council's guidance are 2.4m by 4.8m for an ordinary perpendicular space and 2.8m by 4.8m for a disabled space, with 1.2m kept clear between two disabled spaces; the council cites Approved Document M and DfT Traffic Advisory Leaflet 5/95. EV guidance in PAS 1899:2022, as reported, calls for green bays with a white EV symbol, and 3.6m by 5.0m where a bay is accessible. You can measure the set-out on site.

How much does car park line marking cost in Oxted?

No two car parks cost the same to mark, so the figure comes from a free site survey in Oxted, after which you receive a clear, itemised quote. Bay and symbol numbers and the total run of line carry most weight, followed by new layout or refresh, thermoplastic or paint (industry guides price thermoplastic at around twice as much), any old lines that need removing, and how easy the site is to access.

Can old markings be removed if we change the car park layout?

That is possible. Clearing old markings belongs to the surface preparation stage, ahead of any new lines. Without removal, drivers can be misled by leftover lines, and a new layout risks being traced from the old. Plans to add EV or disabled bays are a typical trigger, and one guide calls sticking with a layout because it has always been there a common error. You see the new plan on the ground first.

Can line marking go straight onto new tarmac?

Normally there is a gap. The advice on one typical paint data sheet is to give new asphalt at least 15 days before marking, and to allow another week or two in cold or damp spells. Marking a surface that is dirty, or damp from moisture still rising out of it after rain, is a common cause of lines coming off. London Tar lays tarmac as well, so raise the timing at the survey.

How long does thermoplastic line marking last?

Industry guides suggest roughly 5 to 7 years under normal UK conditions. That figure shrinks where wheels turn, stop or queue, under heavy vehicles, and where lines meet oil spills, pressure washing, frost or strong sun. Cracks in the surface underneath shorten it too. For comparison, paint in a busy car park often lasts only about two winters. Entrances and turning areas are where to look for wear first.

How can I check a line marking quote will get the layout right?

Start by checking the quote rests on an actual site survey and itemises bays, symbols, line lengths, material and the handling of old lines. Set-out is behind most of the line marking complaints on record, from narrow bays to lines copied off an old faded layout. London Tar provides a free survey and an itemised quote, and the agreed layout is marked out on the ground so you can review it before application.
