Overview

Car Park Surfacing in Godalming

London Tar provides car park surfacing in Godalming and works throughout the rest of Surrey as standard.

Your car park sets the tone before anyone reaches the door, and it carries traffic from morning to night. In Godalming and across Surrey, London Tar surfaces car parks for businesses, retail units, schools and public facilities, building each one for constant comings and goings and finishing it with clear bay and traffic markings. A heavy-duty construction with good drainage is what keeps it in shape.

The surface takes most strain where vehicles slow, turn and load, at entrances, along aisles and around turning points, and we size the construction for it. Bays, arrows, hatching, disabled spaces and EV charging bays are laid out in thermoplastic exactly as you want them. Where a site is large, the job is phased, keeping part of the car park available so customers, staff and visitors are disturbed as little as possible.

What’s included

How we work

From survey to finished surface

  1. 1

    Free site survey

    Written quote

You then get a clear written quote, itemised in full, before any work begins.

  3. 3

    Groundwork and preparation

Groundwork means digging to the right depth, a compacted sub-base, and drainage and edgings in place.

  4. 4

    Laying and compaction

We machine-lay wherever the job allows, then compact the surface level so it wears well.

  5. 5

    Sign-off and clear-up

Once complete, we walk round with you, take our waste away and leave the site clean.

Pricing

How much does car park surfacing cost?

FAQs

Car Park Surfacing FAQs

Can you keep the car park partly open during works?

Yes, larger car parks are phased, so part stays available while the rest is surfaced. The order is agreed with you before work starts. Useful questions to settle beforehand are which bays close first, how deliveries and emergency access are kept clear, and where signage and disabled parking go during each phase.

Do you mark out disabled bays and EV spaces?

Yes, and to your layout. We set out disabled bays, EV charging bays, standard bays and arrows in thermoplastic. For dimensions, Disabled Motoring UK cites BS 8300 and recommends accessible bays of at least 2400 mm by 4800 mm, with a 1200 mm hatched transfer zone shared between bays where needed. Approved Document S covers EV charging for new non-residential buildings and major renovations with over 10 spaces.

Do you install drainage and gullies in the car park?

Yes, along with the falls that feed them. Pooling is a levels problem first: water collects where the surface is flat or dished and cannot reach a drain. We design falls and fit gullies and channels so rain runs off rather than lying. That reduces slip and ice risks around entrances, and it is far easier to deal with during surfacing than afterwards.

Can you add speed bumps, bollards or barriers?

Yes, if your site needs them. Speed bumps, bollards and kerbing can be built in as part of the job, and barriers and wheel stops added to the scheme. Speed bumps help on long straight aisles and near pedestrian routes; bollards protect building fronts and walkways. We discuss where they should go at the survey and include them in your written quote.

How long will our car park be out of use?

The programme is agreed before work starts, so you can plan around it. How long it runs depends on the area and whether the base needs digging out. New tarmac is normally fit for traffic 24 to 48 hours after laying. CDM 2015 asks commercial clients to allow enough time and provide pre-construction information, so share your trading hours early.

Is tarmac the right surface for our car park, or should we look at concrete, block paving or resin?

Tarmac is the right answer for most car parks, but check two things first. Industry cost guides list standard tarmacadam for general car parks and heavier asphalt for heavy or turning traffic, so the specification should match your vehicles. Then drainage: under permitted development, new hard surfaces at commercial premises must be porous or drain to a permeable area. Concrete, block paving and resin can be compared at your free survey.

Do we need planning permission to resurface or extend our car park?

You may not, but it is worth checking before you commit. Permitted development rules (Part 7, Class E) let shops and other Class E premises lay new or replacement hard surfaces, on condition they are porous or drain to a permeable area. That right stops if new hard surface would exceed 50 m², or within the curtilage of a listed building. Schools, hospitals and industrial premises use different classes. Ask your council's planning department.

Can our car park just be resurfaced, or does it need rebuilding from the base?

It can be resurfaced if the base is sound. A base that has failed shows itself through widespread cracking, sinking areas and potholes that come back soon after patching, and overlaying it only buys a short time. Documented car park failures have been traced to thin construction and to settlement around new drainage. At the free survey we look at your car park and recommend the right route.

How much does car park surfacing cost in Godalming?

It varies with the site, so a Godalming car park is always priced after a visit. The main factors are area and space numbers, the condition of the existing base, any dig-out, drainage, kerbs and edges, the marking layout, traffic calming and phasing. The survey is free, and the written quote that follows is itemised so you can see what each part costs.

How long should a resurfaced car park last, and how often will it need work?

General industry guidance puts a well-maintained car park at 20 to 30 years, resurfaced around every ten years if it has worn evenly. A thin base, poor drainage and neglected defects are what bring that forward. Keep gullies clear, and get cracks, potholes and sunken patches repaired as soon as they appear.

Are we liable if someone trips on a pothole or uneven surface in our car park?

Possibly. Occupiers owe visitors a duty of reasonable care under the Occupiers' Liability Act 1957, and the courts have said the standard may be higher where disabled or vulnerable visitors use a site. In a 2023 Court of Appeal case, a joint occupier with limited control of a car park was found to have limited duties. Inspect, record and repair promptly, and take a solicitor's advice on your own position.

What should a car park surfacing quote and guarantee include?

A clear written breakdown is the starting point: area, base preparation, construction depths, drainage, kerbs, lining, phasing, waste and payment terms. Ask for any guarantee in writing, with its length, what it covers and what would void it. Contractors have returned to fix car park failures at their own expense under contract aftercare, so the wording matters. Request an insurance certificate and a named contact for problems after handover.
