Overview

Line Marking in Reigate

Searching for line marking in Reigate? London Tar works in Reigate and throughout the county of Surrey.

When bays, arrows and walkways are clear to see, a site runs more safely and people find their way without fuss. London Tar lays thermoplastic markings in Reigate and elsewhere in Surrey for car parks, private roads, warehouses, playgrounds and sports courts. Thermoplastic bonds solidly to the surface and keeps showing under heavy use much longer than normal paint.

It has become the standard material for car parks, roads and industrial floors precisely because traffic does not wear it away quickly. You see the layout marked out on site before any material goes down, and the finished lines and symbols are crisp, accurate and in the colours you need.

What’s included

  • Car park bays, hatching, arrows and disabled bays
  • Centre and edge lines and give-way markings for roads
  • Safety zones, walkways and floor markings in warehouses
  • Lines for sports courts and games for playgrounds

How we work

From survey to finished surface

  1. 1

    Set out

The layout is settled with you and marked out on the ground, so it is visible before anything is applied.

  2. 2

    Surface prep

Old, worn markings are dealt with and the surface cleaned, so the fresh lines bond as they should.

  3. 3

    Application

Thermoplastic or spray is laid to a sharp, even line in the colours required.

  4. 4

    Check and open up

The markings cure quickly, and the area usually reopens that same day.

FAQs

Line Marking FAQs

How long do the markings take to dry?

Thermoplastic takes minutes. It sets as it cools, so most areas can be reopened on the same day, and timings are confirmed on site. Paint, according to a typical data sheet, is touch dry after 5 to 10 minutes and fully dry after 15 to 20 at 15°C. That sheet also says not to paint when the air or surface is under 5°C, or when the surface sits within 3°C of the dew point.

Can you refresh faded markings without resurfacing?

Often, yes. A sound surface can be cleaned, set out again and re-marked over the existing lines with no resurfacing. Set-out is the step to watch, as copying faded marks can produce bays that are the wrong size. Surface cracks, potholes and poor preparation are known to shorten the life of new markings, so damage is best repaired first; London Tar also carries out pothole repairs and tarmac surfacing.

Why thermoplastic rather than paint?

It holds up to traffic for much longer. Industry guides put thermoplastic at about 5 to 7 years under normal UK conditions, while standard paint in an exposed or busy car park often lasts around two winters. Thermoplastic also copes better with freeze and thaw. The upfront cost is roughly double that of water-based paint, but repainting with cheap paint can cost about twice as much over a decade. Paint suits quiet or indoor areas.

What colours and symbols can you mark?

For car parks: standard and disabled bays, arrows and hatching. For private roads on business parks and estates: centre lines, edge lines and give-way markings. For EV charging: green bays with a white EV symbol, as PAS 1899 is reported to recommend. Warehouses get walkways and safety zones, and schools get playground games and sports-court lines. Which colours go where is settled with you during set-out.

Do you mark warehouse floors and playgrounds?

Yes. Logistics and warehouse sites get pedestrian walkways and safety zones marked on the floor, and HSE guidance asks for crossing points to be suitably marked and signposted. Schools get playground games and sports-court lines. Before a playground is marked, cracks and potholes in the macadam should be put right, since the graphics go straight onto it. Work needs dry conditions above roughly 5°C, so school holidays in spring and summer work well.

What size should disabled and EV bays be in a private car park?

Surrey County Council guidance recommends 2.4 by 4.8 metres for a standard perpendicular bay and 2.8 by 4.8 metres for a disabled one, leaving 1.2 metres between two disabled bays; it refers to Approved Document M and DfT Traffic Advisory Leaflet 5/95. EV bays under PAS 1899:2022, as reported, are 2.4 by 4.8 metres as standard and 3.6 by 5.0 metres where accessible, marked in green with a white EV symbol.

How much does car park line marking cost in Reigate?

Each car park is different, so the price follows a free site survey in Reigate and comes as a clear, itemised quote. The main drivers are the number of bays and symbols and the length of lines, a refresh versus a new layout, the choice of thermoplastic or paint (roughly twice the material cost for thermoplastic, according to industry guides), old-line removal, and access or traffic management.

Can old markings be removed if we change the car park layout?

Yes, they can. Old markings are handled during surface preparation so the new layout starts clean. Hydroblasting is one way specialists strip old lines. Removing them matters: leftover markings confuse drivers and can be traced by mistake. Layouts often change when EV or disabled bays are added, and assuming the old layout is right because it has always been there is listed as a common error. You see the new set-out on site first.

Can line marking go straight onto new tarmac?

Usually not straight away. A typical paint data sheet recommends leaving new asphalt for 15 days or more before marking, with one or two extra weeks in cold or damp weather. Common reasons markings fall off include a dirty or damp surface and a low application temperature, and one industry guide says skipping preparation can halve a marking's life. London Tar lays tarmac too, so ask about the timing for your surface at the survey.

How long does thermoplastic line marking last?

Around 5 to 7 years under normal UK conditions, according to industry guides, though one manufacturer claims 8 years or more against 1 to 2 for conventional paint. Use makes the difference. Areas where vehicles stop, turn or queue wear faster, and so do lines exposed to heavy vehicles, oil, frost, UV light, pressure washing or a cracked surface. Entrances and turning areas are worth checking first.

How can I check a line marking quote will get the layout right?

Check the quote is based on a site survey and lists bay numbers, symbols, the material and how old lines will be treated. Most complaints found about line marking relate to set-out: bays marked too narrow, crooked lines, or layouts traced from faded markings. With London Tar the survey is free, the quote is itemised, and the agreed layout is marked out on site so you can see it before application.
