Overview

Line Marking in Guildford

If you need line marking in Guildford, London Tar covers the town and the rest of Surrey.

A clearly marked site is safer and far simpler for drivers and pedestrians to use. London Tar applies hard-wearing thermoplastic to car parks, private roads, warehouses, playgrounds and sports courts in Guildford and throughout Surrey. The material bonds tightly to the surface beneath it and remains visible under heavy traffic long after ordinary paint would have worn.

Car parks, roads and industrial floors take a lot of punishment, which is why thermoplastic is the standard there. The layout is set out on site first so you can see it in place, and only then are the lines and symbols applied, neat and accurate, in the colours your site calls for.

What’s included

  • Car park bays, arrows, hatching and accessible bays
  • Give-way markings with road centre and edge lines
  • Floor markings for warehouse walkways and safety zones

FAQs

Line Marking FAQs

How long do the markings take to dry?

Within minutes for thermoplastic. It sets as it cools, so most areas reopen the same day, and the timings are confirmed on site. Paint is slower: a typical data sheet gives 5 to 10 minutes to touch dry and 15 to 20 minutes to dry fully at 15°C. Paint should not be applied when the air or surface is below 5°C, the same sheet adds, or close to the dew point.

Can you refresh faded markings without resurfacing?

Yes, in many cases. Provided the existing surface is sound, the area is cleaned, set out and re-marked straight over the old lines. Setting out matters: tracing faded lines can carry old mistakes into the new marking. If the survey shows cracking or potholes, those are worth repairing first, as one industry guide names surface damage as a cause of early wear. Signs it is time include cars parking across bays.

Why thermoplastic rather than paint?

Thermoplastic simply survives traffic better. It goes down hot and bonds to the surface, and the Traffic Signs Manual notes that its night-time reflectivity comes from glass beads mixed into the material. Industry guides suggest 5 to 7 years in normal conditions against about two winters for standard paint on busy sites. It costs around twice as much as water-based paint up front. Paint remains the better fit for multi-storey and underground car parks.

What colours and symbols can you mark?

The range covers the markings that keep vehicles and people moving safely across a commercial site. That means bays, disabled bays, arrows and hatching in car parks; give-way markings and centre and edge lines on access roads; walkways and safety zones inside warehouses; and games and court lines for schools. Charging bays can follow the green and white EV marking reported under PAS 1899. You agree colours at set-out.

Do you mark warehouse floors and playgrounds?

Yes, both are part of the service. Indoors, walkways and safety zones mark out where staff can walk safely around vehicle routes; HSE guidance says crossing points should be suitably marked and signposted. For schools and academies, games and court lines are laid on the existing playground surface, which should be repaired first if cracked. A dry surface above about 5°C is generally needed, so book a holiday slot in spring or summer.

What size should disabled and EV bays be in a private car park?

Guidance from Surrey County Council gives 2.4m by 4.8m for a standard bay set at right angles to the aisle, and 2.8m by 4.8m for a disabled bay, with a 1.2m gap between two disabled bays. BS 8300, as reported, also includes 1.2m access zones at the sides and rear. For EV charging, PAS 1899 is reported to suggest 3.6m by 5.0m for accessible bays. Treat these as recommended sizes, and check them on the marked-out layout.

How much does car park line marking cost in Guildford?

It depends on what your car park needs, which is why the starting point is a free site survey in Guildford, followed by a clear, itemised quote. Price is shaped by the amount of lining and the number of bays and symbols, by whether it is a fresh layout or a refresh, by the material (guides put thermoplastic at about twice the cost of paint), and by access and any removal of old lines.

Can old markings be removed if we change the car park layout?

Yes, old lines can be dealt with as part of preparing the surface for the new layout. Specialists remove markings by methods such as hydroblasting. Leaving old lines in place risks confusing drivers, and one guide lists assuming the existing layout is best because it has always been there as a common mistake. Adding disabled or EV bays is a frequent reason for a change, and your new layout is marked out on site first.

Can line marking go straight onto new tarmac?

It is usually better to wait. A typical road paint data sheet asks for at least 15 days on new asphalt before marking, and a week or two longer in cold or damp conditions. Damp is a common reason markings fail to stick, and moisture can rise after rain even when the surface looks dry. London Tar lays tarmac as well, so the timing can be discussed at the survey.

How long does thermoplastic line marking last?

Expect several years: industry guides put thermoplastic at about 5 to 7 years in normal UK conditions. Lines in busy spots fade sooner. Heavy vehicles, stop-start and turning traffic, oil and chemical spills, frost, UV and pressure washing all shorten the life, as do cracks in the surface. Paint, by comparison, is often worn within about two winters in an exposed or busy car park.

How can I check a line marking quote will get the layout right?

A good quote is based on a site visit and spells out the bays, symbols and lines being marked, the material and how old markings are treated. Most complaints about line marking concern set-out, not materials: narrow bays and lines copied from old ones. London Tar's free survey leads to an itemised quote, and the layout is marked out on site so you can check it before anything goes down.
