Overview

Tarmac Surfacing in Oxted

Looking for tarmac surfacing in Oxted? London Tar covers Oxted, and every other part of Surrey as well.

Tarmac earns its place on any area that has to cope with people and vehicles, because it wears hard and keeps the cost reasonable. In Oxted, London Tar surfaces footpaths, playgrounds, yards, private roads, school grounds and hardstanding, with British Standards materials laid by the right plant for a smooth, even top.

Speed and value make tarmac a practical choice: it is installed quickly, is typically usable after a day or two, and costs less per square metre than resin or block paving. For demanding use it is built in two courses, base and surface, rolled hot to a dense, consistent finish and edged cleanly at kerbs, buildings and existing surfaces. Good preparation is what the finish depends on, so the ground is dug to the right depth and every layer compacted before the top course.

What’s included

  • Clearance, then excavation to the correct depth
  • Sub-base compacted for the job it has to do

FAQs

Tarmac Surfacing FAQs

Is tarmac suitable for a sloped site?

You can tarmac a sloping site without trouble; the material copes with gradients as well as level ground. Your main concern should be where rain goes. We shape the falls so water moves away from buildings, fitting a channel or gully if the ground runs towards them. On your Oxted premises that keeps runoff away from entrances people use, and it fits planning rules that expect water to reach a permeable area.

Can you match into an existing tarmac surface?

You can. The old tarmac is cut back to a firm edge and the new surface tied into it, so the join holds firm without lifting. That lets you extend your yard or car park, or replace one tired section, and still end up with a single continuous surface across your Oxted site.

How thick should a tarmac surface be?

Your build-up should suit the heaviest vehicle on site. Tarmac sits on a compacted sub-base, with a binder course and a surface course above, and all three get deeper for vans, lorries or HGVs. British Standards set minimum thicknesses for each mix, and a geotextile membrane is often suggested on poorly draining soil. Sinking where wheels rest usually means a weak sub-base. Your quote lists the layers we specify.

How soon can I use it after laying?

You can usually open it to traffic after 24 to 48 hours, depending on weather and layer thickness, and we confirm the exact timing before work starts so your deliveries and staff parking can be planned. It goes on hardening for weeks, more slowly in hot weather. Until it does, drivers should not turn the steering while standing still, and jacks, stands and skips should be kept off.

Do you offer coloured tarmac?

You can have red or another coloured tarmac wherever plain black is not wanted. Colour is a simple way to set a footway, a play area or a particular zone apart from the rest of your Oxted site. Options are brought along to the survey for you to look at.

Do we need planning permission to tarmac a yard, forecourt or car park?

You may not, if the new area is modest. Under Part 7, Class E permitted development, qualifying commercial premises can usually add up to 50 m² of hard surface, provided it is porous or drains to a permeable area. Listed buildings are excluded, and industrial sites and schools fall under their own classes. Your circumstances may differ and this is not legal advice, so check with the council.

Can you lay tarmac over an existing concrete or tarmac surface?

You often can, provided the base is stable. Laying over sound concrete or tarmac avoids digging out, and national price guides suggest you could save as much as 30 to 40%. If your existing surface is cracked through, rocking or sinking, a new layer will inherit the movement, so it needs removing. British Standards also set minimum thicknesses per mix. We check your base during the survey and give you an honest view.

Is tarmac cheaper than block paving, resin or concrete for a commercial site?

You will usually pay less for tarmac. National price guides put it below concrete, block paving and resin bound per square metre, with gravel cheaper. Their figures differ, so compare quotes for the same area and sub-base. Weigh up the long run for your site as well: block paving tends to last 20 to 30 years but needs more upkeep, while tarmac is plainer, can fade and is non-porous.

How much does tarmac surfacing cost in Oxted?

Your Oxted price is set by your site, which is why the survey comes first and costs nothing. You are paying for the area, the traffic it must take, the dig-out depth and sub-base, one or two layers of tarmac, edging, drainage, machine access and waste removal. A new crossover brings a council fee too. National guides say prices are higher around London. You get it all itemised in a written quote.

Can tarmac be laid in the rain or in winter?

You can lay in light rain, but not over standing water, ice or snow, which the British Standard for asphalt rules out. Cold, windy days need care because thin surface layers lose heat fast and tarmac must be rolled hot. Price guides recommend avoiding heavy rain and ground temperatures below 5°C. We confirm the timings for your site before starting, so your operations can be planned around them.

How long does a tarmac surface last, and why do some break up early?

You can expect up to around 15 years from well-laid tarmac, according to national guides, or 15 to 20 years or more with maintenance. If a surface breaks up early, the build is usually at fault: crumbling or pitting from thin, loose layers, sinking under heavy vehicles from a weak sub-base, ponding from poor levels. We dig to the right depth, compact each layer and hot-roll a base and surface course.
