Overview

Line Marking in Woking

Need line marking in Woking? London Tar works across Woking and covers every part of Surrey.

Bays, arrows and walkways that are easy to read help people park safely and move around a site without confusion. In Woking and across Surrey, London Tar marks car parks, private roads, warehouses, playgrounds and sports courts in tough thermoplastic. It grips the surface hard and stays clear under heavy wheels much longer than ordinary paint does.

That resistance to traffic is why thermoplastic is the go-to for car parks, roads and industrial floors. Before any material is laid, your layout is set out on the ground for you to see, and then the lines and symbols go down crisp and accurate in the colours you have chosen.

What’s included

FAQs

Line Marking FAQs

How long do the markings take to dry?

Thermoplastic sets within minutes as it cools, so most areas are back in use the same day, and exact timings are confirmed on site. If paint is used, one manufacturer's data sheet gives touch dry in 5 to 10 minutes and fully dry in 15 to 20 minutes at 15°C, and advises against applying it below 5°C or when the surface is less than 3°C above the dew point.

Can you refresh faded markings without resurfacing?

Usually, yes. If the surface is in good shape, the area is cleaned and the lines are re-marked over the top, without resurfacing. The new set-out should follow your agreed layout, not just trace what has faded. Where there are cracks or potholes, fix those first, since surface damage and poor preparation are named causes of markings wearing early. London Tar handles pothole repairs and tarmac too.

Why thermoplastic rather than paint?

Because it lasts far longer once traffic starts using it. Thermoplastic is applied hot and bonds firmly, and industry guides suggest around 5 to 7 years in normal UK conditions. Standard paint on a busy car park can be worn after about two winters. Thermoplastic costs roughly double what water-based paint does, yet repainting again and again can work out dearer over ten years. For low-traffic or indoor areas, paint is still a sensible choice.

What colours and symbols can you mark?

Car park operators usually ask for bays, arrows, hatching and disabled bays, while estates with private roads add centre lines, edge lines and give-way markings. EV charging spaces can be picked out in green with a white EV symbol, which PAS 1899 is reported to recommend. Warehouse walkways and safety zones, playground games and sports-court lines are also marked. Colours are agreed with you when the layout is set out.

Do you mark warehouse floors and playgrounds?

Both, yes. Warehouse operators use walkways and safety zones to separate people from vehicle movements, and HSE guidance is that crossing points should be suitably marked and signposted. Schools are a regular commercial client for playground games and sports-court lines. Playground graphics sit on the existing macadam, so it needs to be sound, and the work wants a dry surface above about 5°C, so holidays in spring or summer suit best.

What size should disabled and EV bays be in a private car park?

For private car parks, Surrey County Council guidance sets out a standard perpendicular bay of 2.4m x 4.8m and a disabled bay of 2.8m x 4.8m, plus a 1.2m space between a pair of disabled bays. PAS 1899:2022, as reported, recommends 2.4m x 4.8m for a standard EV bay and 3.6m x 5.0m for an accessible one with a 1.2m clear zone. Because your layout is marked out before any lining, you can measure the bays first.

How much does car park line marking cost in Woking?

There is no single price, because it depends on your car park. After a free site survey in Woking you receive a clear, itemised quote. What moves the figure: how many bays, symbols and metres of line are needed, refreshing faded lines versus a new layout, thermoplastic or paint (thermoplastic is roughly twice the material cost, according to industry guides), removing old markings, and access or traffic management.

Can old markings be removed if we change the car park layout?

They can. Old markings are dealt with during surface preparation, before any new lines go down. Hydroblasting is one method specialists use to remove lines. Clearing the old layout matters, as leftover markings confuse drivers and can lead to a contractor tracing the wrong lines. Changes like this often come with adding EV charging or disabled bays, and the new plan is set out on the ground for you to agree first.

Can line marking go straight onto new tarmac?

Not immediately in most cases. One typical road paint data sheet says new asphalt should be left for at least 15 days before marking, with an extra week or two if the weather is cold or damp. Markings that go onto a damp or dirty surface struggle to bond. London Tar lays tarmac as well as marking it, so you can talk through the right timing for your new surface at the free survey.

How long does thermoplastic line marking last?

Industry guides put it at roughly 5 to 7 years in normal UK conditions. One manufacturer claims 8 years or more for its thermoplastic, compared with 1 to 2 years for conventional paint. How long yours lasts depends on what drives over it: lorries, queuing traffic and tight turns wear lines faster, as do oil spills, frost, pressure washing and a cracked surface. Check entrances and turning areas first.

How can I check a line marking quote will get the layout right?

Look for a quote that comes after someone has surveyed the site and that lists what will be marked, item by item. The complaints that crop up most about line marking concern set-out: bays that come out too narrow, or lines traced from old faded markings rather than the current layout. London Tar starts with a free site survey and marks the agreed layout out on site, so you can check it before anything is applied.
