Overview

Car Park Surfacing in Woking

Need car park surfacing in Woking? London Tar works in Woking and across the rest of Surrey.

First impressions start in the car park, and it has to work hard too. We lay car parks for offices, schools, shops and public buildings in Woking and around Surrey, building them to take vehicles coming and going all day and finishing them with clear bay and traffic lines. Sound drainage and a heavy-duty build are the two things that keep a car park doing its job.

Wear concentrates where cars brake, turn and pull in, so entrances, aisles and turning points get a construction sized to take it. We mark out your bays, arrows, hatching, disabled spaces and EV charging bays in thermoplastic, following your layout. If your site is large, we phase the job so one section stays open while another is surfaced, keeping disruption for your business and visitors low.

What’s included

  • Sub-base and surfacing heavy enough for all-day use
  • Bay lines, arrows, hatching and disabled bays
  • Gullies, falls and drainage to shed surface water
  • Kerbing, bollards and speed bumps as required

FAQs

Car Park Surfacing FAQs

Can you keep the car park partly open during works?

Yes, where the site is big enough to split. We divide the car park into phases and keep one part usable while another is surfaced, with the order agreed before the first day. It is worth deciding in advance which bays must stay available, how deliveries will get in, where disabled parking moves to and what temporary signs are needed.

Do you mark out disabled bays and EV spaces?

We do. Your bays, disabled spaces, EV charging bays and arrows are marked to your layout in hard-wearing thermoplastic. For sizing, Disabled Motoring UK cites BS 8300 in recommending accessible bays of at least 2400 mm by 4800 mm plus a 1200 mm hatched zone for getting in and out. Approved Document S sets EV charging requirements for new non-residential buildings and major renovations with more than 10 parking spaces.

Do you install drainage and gullies in the car park?

Yes, and the falls matter as much as the gullies. Ponding usually comes from levels that do not shed water and too few outlets, not from the surface itself. We set the falls and fit gullies and channels so rain has somewhere to go. That matters for safety as well as looks, since standing water near doors and walkways turns to ice in winter and causes slips.

Can you add speed bumps, bollards or barriers?

Yes. Where your site needs them, speed bumps, bollards and kerbing go in as part of the same job, and barriers or wheel stops can be added. Speed bumps slow vehicles where people walk, bollards keep traffic off footpaths and away from buildings, and barriers control who gets in. Show us where you want them at the survey and each one is listed in your itemised quote.

How long will our car park be out of use?

You get an agreed programme before work starts, and its length is set by the size of the area and whether the base is being rebuilt. Once laid, fresh surfacing can normally take cars again after 24 to 48 hours. Under CDM 2015, a business commissioning construction work must allow enough time and give pre-construction information, so tell us about access and opening hours when we survey.

Is tarmac the right surface for our car park, or should we look at concrete, block paving or resin?

Tarmac suits most car parks, but not every one. General cost guides put standard tarmacadam forward for everyday car parks and heavier asphalt specifications for HGV routes, junctions and turning areas. Planning rules can matter as much as wear: at commercial premises, new hard surfaces allowed without an application must be porous or drain to a permeable area. Compare tarmac with concrete, block paving or resin at survey stage, against your traffic and drainage.

Do we need planning permission to resurface or extend our car park?

Not always. The answer turns on whether you are replacing an existing surface or adding new hard standing, and on your type of premises. For shops and other Class E premises, permitted development covers new or replacement hard surfaces that are porous or drain to a permeable area, up to 50 m² of new surface, and not within the grounds of a listed building. Industrial sites, schools and hospitals have their own classes. Your council's planning team can confirm.

Can our car park just be resurfaced, or does it need rebuilding from the base?

That depends on what lies underneath. A stable base that drains well can usually take a new overlay. Cracking across wide areas, dips and sunken patches, or potholes that keep coming back after repair, point to a failed base that needs digging out. Overlaying a failed base just hides the problem for a while. At the survey we check the condition of your car park and tell you plainly which approach suits.

How much does car park surfacing cost in Woking?

Car park prices in Woking vary too much from site to site for a fair guide figure. The main drivers are the size of the area, whether the base can be kept or must be rebuilt, drainage work, kerbs, how many bays and markings you need, traffic calming and whether the work is phased. Book the free site survey and you get a clear, itemised quote in writing before committing to anything.

How long should a resurfaced car park last, and how often will it need work?

Published industry guidance puts the life of a well-kept car park at about 20 to 30 years, with a resurface around every decade if it has worn well. The biggest factors are the strength of the base, how well water drains away and how quickly defects are dealt with. Fill potholes and seal cracks early, and keep gullies clear, to put off larger repairs.

Are we liable if someone trips on a pothole or uneven surface in our car park?

Possibly. The Occupiers' Liability Act 1957 puts a duty of reasonable care on whoever occupies and controls the car park, so leaving a known trip hazard unrepaired is a risk. A 2023 Court of Appeal case about a kerb beside a disabled bay showed courts may look harder at sites used by disabled visitors. Inspect regularly, log what you find and repair promptly. For your own position, speak to a solicitor.

What should a car park surfacing quote and guarantee include?

Get it in writing, and get it itemised. Look for the area covered, how the existing base will be treated, layer depths, drainage, kerbs and edges, the marking layout, phasing, waste and payment terms. Any guarantee should state its length and exclusions in writing, because arguments over car park failures often hinge on what was actually promised. Ask for an insurance certificate and a named contact for aftercare.
