Overview

Car Park Surfacing in Epsom

If your car park in Epsom needs surfacing, London Tar covers Epsom and all of Surrey.

A car park creates an impression and does a hard day's work at the same time. London Tar surfaces car parks in Epsom and across Surrey for businesses, schools, retail units and public facilities, building them to carry vehicles coming and going and finishing with bay and traffic markings that keep things orderly. Getting the drainage right and the construction heavy enough is what keeps a car park working well.

Entrances, aisles and turning points take the heaviest wear, because vehicles brake, turn and load the surface there over and over, and we size the construction to match. Bays, arrows, hatching, disabled spaces and EV charging bays are set out in thermoplastic to your layout. Larger car parks are phased so part stays open while the rest is surfaced, keeping disruption for your business and visitors to a minimum.

FAQs

Car Park Surfacing FAQs

Can you keep the car park partly open during works?

Yes. Larger car parks are phased so part stays open while the rest is surfaced, and you agree the phasing with us beforehand. Give us your delivery times, busy periods and disabled parking needs, and we can sequence the work so customers and staff still have somewhere to park.

Do you mark out disabled bays and EV spaces?

Yes. Disabled spaces, EV charging bays, standard bays and arrows are set out to your layout in durable thermoplastic. Disabled Motoring UK, citing BS 8300, recommends accessible bays of at least 2400 mm by 4800 mm with a 1200 mm hatched transfer zone. Approved Document S requires at least one chargepoint for new non-residential buildings and major renovations with more than 10 spaces; check with building control for your site.

Do you install drainage and gullies in the car park?

Yes. Water pools where the surface is flat or dips and cannot reach a drain, so laying new tarmac to old levels keeps the puddles. Falls are designed and gullies and channels fitted to take the water away. Ponding at entrances is a slip and ice hazard, so it is worth fixing as part of the job.

Can you add speed bumps, bollards or barriers?

Yes. Where needed, speed bumps, bollards and kerbing are built into the scheme, and barriers and wheel stops can be added. They are planned with the bay and arrow layout so the car park works as one design. Show us at the survey where you want traffic slowed or kept back, and they will be itemised in your quote.

How long will our car park be out of use?

We plan it with you before starting, so there are no surprises. The programme is agreed up front and depends on the area and whether the base must be rebuilt, and fresh tarmac usually takes traffic 24 to 48 hours after laying. Under CDM 2015, commercial clients must allow enough time and share site information, so give us your delivery times early.

Is tarmac the right surface for our car park, or should we look at concrete, block paving or resin?

Usually tarmac is the right fit. Industry cost guides list standard tarmacadam for general car parks, and heavier asphalt where HGVs, buses or tight turning load the surface. Drainage can also decide it, because at commercial premises new hard surfaces laid under permitted development must be porous or drain to a permeable area. We can compare tarmac with concrete, block paving and resin for your site during the free survey.

Do we need planning permission to resurface or extend our car park?

Maybe not, but the answer depends on the premises and whether you are adding new hard standing. Permitted development lets shops and other Class E premises lay new or replacement hard surfaces if they are porous or drain to a permeable area, up to 50 m² of new surface, and outside a listed building's curtilage. Schools and hospitals fall under Class N, industrial sites under Class J. Confirm with your council before work starts.

Can our car park just be resurfaced, or does it need rebuilding from the base?

If the base is stable and drains well, resurfacing should do. Signs the base has failed include cracking spread across the car park, sinking areas and potholes returning soon after a patch. A failed base needs rebuilding, as overlaying it brings the same faults back. In one reported case, a car park's patched potholes were back within about five months. The free survey is where we assess yours.

How much does car park surfacing cost in Epsom?

We cannot give an honest Epsom figure without seeing the site. The main cost drivers are the area and number of spaces, the condition of the base and any dig-out, drainage, kerbs, the marking layout, traffic calming and phasing around your opening hours. The free site survey leads to a written quote, itemised so you can see each cost.

How long should a resurfaced car park last, and how often will it need work?

Industry guidance says a well-maintained car park should last about 20 to 30 years, with a resurface around every ten years if it has held up well. How long yours lasts depends on its base, its drainage and how promptly defects are fixed. Keep gullies clear and repair cracks, potholes and subsided areas before they spread.

Are we liable if someone trips on a pothole or uneven surface in our car park?

You could be. The Occupiers' Liability Act 1957 requires occupiers to take reasonable care for visitors' safety, and a 2023 Court of Appeal case noted that a joint occupier with limited control had limited duties, while standards may be higher for vulnerable visitors. Inspecting, logging and repairing defects promptly is sensible risk management. This is general information, not legal advice; ask a solicitor about your site.

What should a car park surfacing quote and guarantee include?

Look for a written, itemised quote covering the area, base preparation, layer depths, drainage, kerbs, lining, phasing, waste and payment terms. Any guarantee should be in writing with its length, cover and exclusions stated. Contractors have returned to fix car park failures at their own expense under contract aftercare, so the terms matter. Ask for an insurance certificate and a named aftercare contact.
