Overview

Car Park Surfacing in Esher

Do you need car park surfacing in Esher? London Tar works across Esher and the whole of Surrey.

The first thing visitors meet is your car park, and it needs to cope with steady traffic as well as look the part. London Tar surfaces car parks for schools, offices, retailers and public facilities in Esher and across Surrey, building each one for constant vehicle use and finishing it with bay and traffic markings that are clear to drivers. A heavy-duty construction and drainage that works keep it in good order.

Repeated braking, turning and loading at entrances, aisles and turning points is what wears a car park out, so the construction is designed to carry it. Thermoplastic marking sets out bays, arrows, hatching, disabled bays and EV charging bays to your layout. On larger sites the work is phased so part of the car park stays open, and disruption to your business and visitors is kept to a minimum.

What’s included

  • Heavy-duty sub-base and surfacing for constant traffic

FAQs

Car Park Surfacing FAQs

Can you keep the car park partly open during works?

Yes, on larger sites the work is phased so part of the car park stays open, with the order agreed before starting. Before work begins, decide which bays close first, how deliveries and visitors get in, and where disabled parking moves to, then we plan each phase around those needs.

Do you mark out disabled bays and EV spaces?

Yes, all set out in thermoplastic to your layout: disabled bays, EV charging bays, standard bays and arrows. Disabled Motoring UK, citing BS 8300, recommends accessible bays at least 2400 mm by 4800 mm with a 1200 mm hatched zone alongside for transfer. For EV charging, Approved Document S applies to new non-residential buildings and major renovations with more than 10 spaces; building control can tell you if it applies.

Do you install drainage and gullies in the car park?

Yes, and the falls are designed with them. Pooling comes from levels that hold water and outlets that are missing or too few; a thicker surface does nothing for that. We set falls and fit gullies and channels so water runs off. That keeps walkways safer, cutting slips and ice near the entrance during cold spells.

Can you add speed bumps, bollards or barriers?

Yes. Speed bumps, bollards and kerbing are built in where needed, and barriers and wheel stops can be added to the scheme. Speed bumps calm traffic around pedestrians, bollards keep vehicles away from doors and paths, and barriers control entry. We agree positions with you at the survey and list each item in the written quote.

How long will our car park be out of use?

That is planned with you in advance, through a programme agreed before starting. It depends on the size of the car park and whether the base needs rebuilding. Freshly laid tarmac is generally ready to drive on after 24 to 48 hours. CDM 2015 places duties on commercial clients, including allowing enough time, so let us know about opening hours and deliveries early.

Is tarmac the right surface for our car park, or should we look at concrete, block paving or resin?

For most car parks it is. Industry cost guides list standard tarmacadam for general parking and heavier asphalt for HGV routes, junctions and turning areas, so match the specification to your traffic. Drainage rules can also play a part: new hard surfaces at commercial premises under permitted development need to be porous or drain to a permeable area. You can compare tarmac with concrete, block paving and resin at survey.

Do we need planning permission to resurface or extend our car park?

Not always, though it depends on the work and the premises. Shops and other Class E premises have permitted development rights for new or replacement hard surfaces that are porous or drain to a permeable area, but those rights stop at 50 m² of new hard surface and do not apply within a listed building's curtilage. Industrial premises, schools and hospitals have separate classes. Your council's planning team can confirm what applies.

Can our car park just be resurfaced, or does it need rebuilding from the base?

Where the base is stable and drains, resurfacing is normally enough. If you see widespread cracking, areas that have sunk, or potholes that come back after patching, the base has probably failed, and a rebuild is the fix that lasts. One documented car park needed repeated closures after resurfacing because of settlement around new drainage. We look at your base condition at the free survey.

How much does car park surfacing cost in Esher?

Each Esher car park is priced after a survey because the work varies so much. The cost depends on the area and spaces, whether the base needs rebuilding, drainage, kerbs and edging, the marking layout, any traffic calming and how the work is phased. The survey is free and the written quote that follows lists each item clearly.

How long should a resurfaced car park last, and how often will it need work?

Industry guidance puts the lifespan of a well-maintained car park at about 20 to 30 years, with resurfacing around every ten years if it holds up well. A thin base and poor drainage shorten that considerably. Repairing cracks and potholes early and keeping gullies clear is the most effective way to stretch the gap between major works.

Are we liable if someone trips on a pothole or uneven surface in our car park?

You may be. Occupiers have a duty of reasonable care to visitors under the Occupiers' Liability Act 1957, and courts have said the standard can be higher where disabled or vulnerable people use the site. A clear inspection routine, written records and prompt repairs help you show that care was taken. This is general guidance and not legal advice; consult a solicitor.

What should a car park surfacing quote and guarantee include?

A good quote is written and broken down by item: area, how the existing base is treated, construction depths, drainage, kerbs, lining, phasing, waste and payment terms. Get any guarantee in writing with its length, cover and exclusions; in one car park dispute, a two-year warranty was argued not to cover thin construction. Ask for the insurance certificate and an aftercare contact.
