Overview

Car Park Surfacing in Addlestone

London Tar handles car park surfacing in Addlestone, as well as across every part of Surrey.

A good car park helps your premises look cared for, and it has to stand up to vehicles every hour you are open. London Tar surfaces car parks for businesses, schools, retail units and public facilities in Addlestone and throughout Surrey, built for continual traffic and finished with clear bay and traffic markings. What keeps a car park performing is a heavy-duty construction and drainage designed in from the start.

Vehicles brake, turn and load hardest at entrances, aisles and turning points, so we build the construction to suit that wear. We mark bays, arrows, hatching, disabled bays and EV charging bays in thermoplastic, set out to your layout. If your car park is large, it is surfaced in phases with part kept open, which keeps the disruption to your business and its visitors as low as possible.

FAQs

Car Park Surfacing FAQs

Can you keep the car park partly open during works?

Yes, if your car park is large it is surfaced in phases with part kept open, and the sequence is agreed in advance. Think about your busiest times, delivery access and disabled parking when we plan the phases, so the spaces you rely on most stay available for as long as possible.

Do you mark out disabled bays and EV spaces?

Yes. Disabled bays, EV charging spaces, arrows and standard bays are marked in thermoplastic to your layout. Disabled Motoring UK, citing BS 8300, recommends accessible bays of 2400 mm by 4800 mm as a minimum, with a 1200 mm hatched transfer zone. If you are building new non-residential premises or carrying out a major renovation with more than 10 spaces, Approved Document S applies to EV charging.

Do you install drainage and gullies in the car park?

Yes. Pooling is usually caused by flat or dipped levels and missing drains rather than the surface material, so a new layer on the same levels will not fix it. We design falls and fit gullies and channels to clear rainwater, which also reduces the risk of slips and ice near entrances and walkways.

Can you add speed bumps, bollards or barriers?

Yes. Speed bumps, bollards and kerbing are built in if required, and barriers and wheel stops can be added. Doing it alongside the surfacing means they are set into the new construction and planned with your markings. Tell us where traffic speeds up, where vehicles stray onto paths and whether you want to control access, and we will price it in the quote.

How long will our car park be out of use?

We agree the programme with you before starting, so you know in advance. Its length depends on the area and whether the base needs rebuilding, and fresh tarmac can usually take traffic 24 to 48 hours after laying. As the client, CDM 2015 asks you to allow enough time and provide information about the site, so tell us about deliveries, access and busy periods early.

Is tarmac the right surface for our car park, or should we look at concrete, block paving or resin?

Tarmac suits most car parks, provided the specification fits the traffic. Industry cost guides list standard tarmacadam for general parking and heavier asphalt for heavily loaded or turning areas. Check drainage early too: at commercial premises, new hard surfaces under permitted development must be porous or drain to a permeable area. If concrete, block paving or resin appeals, we can weigh them up at the free survey.

Do we need planning permission to resurface or extend our car park?

That depends on whether you are resurfacing or extending, and what kind of premises you have. For shops and other Class E premises, permitted development allows new or replacement hard surfacing that is porous or drains to a permeable area, but not where new hard surface would exceed 50 m² or the land is in a listed building's curtilage. Separate rules apply to industrial sites, schools and hospitals. Confirm with your local council.

Can our car park just be resurfaced, or does it need rebuilding from the base?

Resurfacing is fine where the base is stable and free-draining. Cracks across large areas, sunken ground and potholes that return after filling are signs of base failure, and in that case only a rebuild from the sub-base will last. Documented failures include a car park that cracked because it was built too thin and had to be dug out. We assess yours during the free survey.

How much does car park surfacing cost in Addlestone?

Car park prices in Addlestone depend on what each site needs, so we do not work from a fixed rate. The area and number of spaces, the base condition, any excavation, drainage, kerbs, the marking design, traffic calming and phasing all play a part. A free site survey comes first, followed by a written quote with each item set out.

How long should a resurfaced car park last, and how often will it need work?

Industry guidance suggests a well-maintained car park lasts about 20 to 30 years, with resurfacing around every ten years if it has held up. Construction depth and drainage set the ceiling; maintenance decides how close you get to it. Repair cracks, potholes and subsided patches promptly and keep gullies clear.

Are we liable if someone trips on a pothole or uneven surface in our car park?

You could be. The Occupiers' Liability Act 1957 requires reasonable care for visitors' safety, so a pothole you know about and leave is a risk. In one Housing Ombudsman case, a landlord was found at fault after taking 148 working days to repair car park potholes against a 28-day policy. Inspect regularly, keep a record and repair promptly. This is not legal advice; speak to a solicitor.

What should a car park surfacing quote and guarantee include?

Get a written quote that itemises the area, base preparation, layer depths, drainage, kerbs and edges, lining, phasing, waste and payment terms. If a guarantee is offered, ask for its length, what it covers and what would void it, all in writing. Check insurance by asking for the certificate, and find out who you contact if something needs attention after handover.
