Overview

Road Surfacing in Addlestone

London Tar provides road surfacing in Addlestone and right across the rest of Surrey, so you are in the right place.

A road has to stand up to traffic day in, day out, often from vans and lorries as well as cars. That puts the emphasis on the sub-base and construction depth, the parts you never see. London Tar builds and resurfaces private, estate and access roads in Addlestone and throughout Surrey with the build planned around the traffic, and line marking is finished where your road needs it.

When an existing road has started to crack, ravel or break into potholes, it can often be overlaid or resurfaced rather than reconstructed. Where people still live or work along the road, the job is phased to keep access open wherever possible. Kerbs, channels and markings are co-ordinated with the surfacing, so the road ends up complete and compliant, with more than a new top layer.

FAQs

Road Surfacing FAQs

Do you resurface roads on occupied estates?

Yes. When a site cannot shut its road completely, the work is phased to keep units trading and lorries moving wherever possible. You get the programme with your quote, which helps facilities managers book deliveries and brief occupiers. Emergency access is kept in mind when the phases are planned, and each phase is handed back as soon as it is ready.

Can you deal with drainage problems at the same time?

Yes. With the road open, gullies, channels and falls can all be built in so standing water is tackled in the same job. The falls are often the real issue, so they are reset first, and gullies are added where needed. Manhole and gully covers in the carriageway need a load rating suited to the vehicles using the road.

Do you install speed bumps and traffic calming?

Yes. A resurface is a natural time to add speed bumps or ramps, and bollards and give-way markings can be included too. The Road Humps Regulations 1999 cover highways, with humps 25mm to 100mm high, so on a private road the owners decide and use those figures as a guide. Agree it with occupiers first, so delivery drivers know what to expect.

Do you handle the kerbing and channels too?

Yes. Kerbs, drainage channels and edging come as part of the work, and the same team lays them with the surface. That keeps a single programme for your site and avoids the finished road waiting on a separate kerbing contractor. It also means the road is handed back complete, with edges and channels finished, not just a new top layer.

How long does a private road resurface take?

Length and the type of work decide it, as an overlay has fewer stages than a full rebuild. Once your road is surveyed, you receive a clear programme with the quote. Occupied roads are phased to keep people moving wherever possible, so occupiers are not cut off for the whole job. Fresh tarmac can usually be driven on after 24 to 48 hours.

Who is responsible for resurfacing a private estate or business park road?

Usually the owner or the management company that runs the estate. A private or unadopted road is not looked after at public expense; Surrey County Council states it does not maintain private roads. The duty to keep it in repair normally falls to the owners of the land fronting it, but your deeds and leases set the detail. To check status, use the Surrey Interactive Map, and ask a solicitor about the documents.

Is it worth bringing our road up to adoptable standard so the council takes it on?

That depends on your budget and aims. Adoptable standard covers far more than a surface: kerbs, footways, gullies, surface water sewers and lighting are typical. Surrey County Council does not normally adopt existing roads, though it will help owners willing to pay the full cost, with Manual for Streets as the standard. Get independent advice, and remember adoption is decided by the council. A durable private resurface is often more practical.

Can our road just be overlaid, or does it need rebuilding?

It all hinges on the base. Overlaying is a sensible choice when the base is solid and the surface is worn. If you see rutting, sunken areas or cracks that return after patching, the base is likely failing, and an overlay will probably break up early. Heavier traffic such as bin lorries also changes the build needed. The free survey settles which way to go.

How much does it cost to resurface a private road in Addlestone?

It depends on the road, so prices follow a free site survey in Addlestone. Length and width, traffic, the state of the existing base and the kerbing, drainage and marking needed are the main factors. A failed base needs rebuilding, which costs more than an overlay. You get a clear, itemised written quote that makes sharing the cost more straightforward.

How long should a resurfaced private road last?

Council figures are a good reference. Kent County Council gives up to 10 years for surface dressing and micro asphalt, and at least 15 for resurfacing that removes deteriorated layers. Public roads are only resurfaced around once every 97 years on average, according to ALARM 2026. Thin layers, poor compaction, poor drainage and heavy use shorten life; clear gullies and early crack repairs extend it.

What should a private road quote include so the job isn't skimped?

Everything that affects quality, in writing: overlay or rebuild, sub-base depth, each layer's thickness, drainage and edges, how ironwork and levels are handled, payment stages and clear-up. Shortcuts are hardest to hide when the spec is written down. Retentions only work if they are in the contract. And be wary of anyone knocking on doors with surplus tarmac for cash.
