Overview

Road Surfacing in Epsom

Want road surfacing in Epsom? London Tar covers Epsom, and the rest of Surrey too.

Private, estate and access roads across Epsom and the rest of Surrey are built and resurfaced by London Tar. Compared with a driveway or path, a road is loaded harder and more constantly, so the sub-base and depth of construction carry the most weight in every decision. The build is planned around the traffic the road actually sees, with line marking completed wherever it is needed.

Not every job is a new road. Many existing roads have started to crack, ravel or pothole and can be overlaid or resurfaced. If the estate is occupied, the work runs in phases so access stays open wherever possible. Kerbing, channels and line marking are co-ordinated in at the same time, so you end up with a complete, compliant road rather than a single new top layer.

FAQs

Road Surfacing FAQs

Do you resurface roads on occupied estates?

Yes. Phasing keeps part of the road open while each section is resurfaced, so occupiers and deliveries can get through wherever possible. You receive a clear programme with the quote and can share it with tenants before work begins. For a school or business park, it helps to line phases up with quieter periods, which can be discussed at the survey.

Can you deal with drainage problems at the same time?

Yes. Standing water is easiest to solve while the road is open, by resetting falls and adding gullies or channels where they are needed. Wrong falls cause more ponding than a shortage of gullies, so levels come first. Any gully or manhole covers in the road need a load rating suited to the traffic, which is checked as the drainage is designed.

Do you install speed bumps and traffic calming?

Yes, speed bumps or ramps can be built in, along with bollards and give-way markings. Highway regulations from 1999 cover humps in public roads (25mm to 100mm high, at least 900mm long), so on a private road the owners decide and those sizes act as a guide. Agree it with occupiers before work starts, and consider signs to warn drivers.

Do you handle the kerbing and channels too?

Yes. Kerbs, channels and road drainage are part of what is included, and they are laid by the same team as the surface. On an estate or site road that means the edges, falls and channels are set together, and the road is handed back complete. If kerbs are missing or failing, the survey records it so the work is in the quote.

How long does a private road resurface take?

There is no fixed figure, because the road's length and the choice between overlay and rebuild change it a lot. Once the survey is done, a clear programme comes with your quote. Where occupiers use the road, the work runs in phases so they can still get in and out wherever possible, and tarmac is usually ready for vehicles after 24 to 48 hours.

Who is responsible for resurfacing a private estate or business park road?

Ask who repairs it. If the answer is not the council, the road is private or unadopted, and Surrey County Council confirms it does not maintain private roads. The owner, or a management company acting for the owners, usually carries the duty to maintain, but the deeds and leases decide the detail. The Surrey Interactive Map shows the road's status; a solicitor can explain what the documents mean for you.

Is it worth bringing our road up to adoptable standard so the council takes it on?

Only if the owners want to take on a substantial project. Surrey County Council does not normally adopt existing roads; it will help, through its Highways Information Team, where owners pay to bring the road up to a Manual for Streets standard. That can mean kerbs, footways, surface water sewers, gullies and lighting, not just a surface. Independent advice is recommended, and adoption is the council's decision alone.

Can our road just be overlaid, or does it need rebuilding?

Overlays suit a road whose base is sound. Rutting, sinking and cracks that keep returning after patches are signs of a failed base, which overlaying will not fix; the new surface usually fails early. Prep on a tired road can include planing, soft spot repairs and setting levels, and an overlay raises the surface at kerbs and covers. The free survey tells you which route your road needs.

How much does it cost to resurface a private road in Epsom?

Each road in Epsom is priced after a free site survey, because the cost depends on it. Length, width, the weight of traffic, the condition of the existing base and any kerbs, drainage or markings all count, and a rebuild costs more than an overlay. You receive a clear, itemised written quote so owners and agents can see the breakdown before agreeing.

How long should a resurfaced private road last?

Expect years rather than decades from lighter treatments. Kent County Council puts surface dressing and micro asphalt at up to 10 years, and full resurfacing that removes the worn layers at 15 or more. Public roads in England and Wales are only resurfaced around every 97 years on average (ALARM 2026), so private roads need their own savings plan. Thin layers, poor compaction, poor drainage and heavy traffic all shorten life.

What should a private road quote include so the job isn't skimped?

A specification you can check the finished road against. It should say whether the road is overlaid or rebuilt and give sub-base depth, layer thicknesses, drainage, edge details, how ironwork and levels are handled, payment stages and clear-up. Laying and compaction of asphalt is covered by BS 594987. A retention only works if the contract includes it, and doorstep tarmac offers are best refused.
