Overview

Road Surfacing in Esher

Road surfacing in Esher is something London Tar covers, along with the whole of Surrey.

Roads are loaded more heavily and more often than almost any other surface you might pave, so most of their strength has to come from the sub-base and the construction depth. In Esher and the wider county, London Tar constructs and resurfaces private, estate and access roads with that build sized to the traffic each road carries, and adds line marking where required.

As well as building from new, London Tar overlays and resurfaces roads that have begun to crack, ravel or pothole. Where an estate is occupied, the work is phased to keep access open as far as possible. Kerbs, channels and line marking are brought together with the surfacing, so you are left with a complete, compliant road and not just a fresh top coat.

FAQs

Road Surfacing FAQs

Do you resurface roads on occupied estates?

Yes. On an occupied estate the resurfacing is sequenced so tenants, visitors and service vehicles keep a way through wherever possible. The programme is set out with your quote, so a managing agent can give occupiers notice of each stage. Sections reopen in turn as each one is finished.

Can you deal with drainage problems at the same time?

Yes, and it is far easier now than after the new surface is down. Standing water usually means the falls are wrong, so levels are corrected first, and gullies and channels are added where water needs collecting. Covers and gratings in the carriageway should be load rated for the heaviest vehicles likely to use the road.

Do you install speed bumps and traffic calming?

Yes. Ramps and speed bumps can be laid in with the new surface, along with bollards and give-way markings. Highway rules from 1999 set humps at 25mm to 100mm high and at least 900mm long, but they apply to public roads; on a private road the owners choose, and those sizes are a reasonable starting point. Talk to occupiers before deciding.

Do you handle the kerbing and channels too?

Yes. Kerbing, channels and drainage are included and laid by the team doing the surfacing. Edges and channels set at the same time as the new surface give you consistent levels and falls, so water is carried away rather than left against the kerb. It also saves a landlord or agent from appointing and co-ordinating a separate trade.

How long does a private road resurface take?

Timescales come from the survey, not a rule of thumb: the length of road and whether it needs rebuilding or overlaying are the deciding factors. The programme is set out with your quote, and work on an occupied road is phased so access remains open wherever possible. After laying, tarmac is generally ready for traffic in 24 to 48 hours.

Who is responsible for resurfacing a private estate or business park road?

Private status usually means two things: the council will not repair it, and the owner, or a management company, is expected to. Surrey County Council is explicit that private roads fall outside its maintenance. The Surrey Interactive Map shows the road's status, but only your deeds and leases, read by a solicitor, settle who pays what and how costs pass to occupiers.

Is it worth bringing our road up to adoptable standard so the council takes it on?

Ask what the road would gain. Adoption hands upkeep to the council, but getting there means meeting its standard in full, and that commonly involves footways, kerbs, gullies, surface water sewers and lighting at the owners' expense. Surrey County Council says it does not normally take on existing roads, though it helps owners who fund the work. Independent advice comes recommended. Many roads are better served by a high-quality private resurface.

Can our road just be overlaid, or does it need rebuilding?

Overlaying only makes sense on a base that is still doing its job. The giveaways of a base that is not are deep ruts, sunken patches and cracks that reappear soon after patching. Put a new layer over that and the faults tend to come back through. The survey checks the base, and also how a higher surface would meet thresholds, kerbs and drain covers.

How much does it cost to resurface a private road in Esher?

Cost is set by the road in front of you. A short, sound road needing an overlay is a very different job from a long one with a failed base, extra drainage or new kerbs, and heavier traffic means a deeper build. That is why every Esher road gets a free site survey first, followed by an itemised written quote you can circulate to everyone contributing.

How long should a resurfaced private road last?

Two council figures frame it: Kent County Council expects up to 10 years from surface dressing or micro asphalt and at least 15 from a resurface that strips out deteriorated layers. Construction quality matters too, since thin layers and poor compaction fail sooner, as do roads with standing water or heavy vehicles. Keeping gullies clear and sealing cracks early adds years.

What should a private road quote include so the job isn't skimped?

Look for a quote that commits to a specification. It should name the treatment, give sub-base depth and layer thicknesses, describe drainage and edges, explain what happens to ironwork and finished levels, and set out payment stages and clear-up. That gives you something to check the work against. Agree any retention in the contract, and ignore cold callers selling surplus tarmac.
