Overview

Tarmac Surfacing in Godalming

Want tarmac surfacing in Godalming? London Tar covers Godalming as part of its work across the whole county of Surrey.

If you need a surface that copes with daily traffic, on foot or on wheels, tarmac is hard-wearing and keeps costs down. London Tar lays it in Godalming for school grounds, playgrounds, yards, private roads, footpaths and hardstanding, with British Standards materials and machinery that gives an even, smooth surface.

Tarmac is versatile and fast. It goes down quickly, takes traffic after a day or two, and per square metre it is cheaper than resin or block paving. Where use requires, we lay a base course plus a surface course and roll them hot, so the finish is dense and even, with tidy edges against kerbs, buildings and existing surfaces. Preparation is what makes it last: we excavate to the correct depth and compact each layer before the surface course.

What’s included

  • Clearance and excavation to the depth your use needs
  • A sub-base compacted to match the use
  • Machine-laid base and surface course, rolled
  • Tidy edges against kerbs, walls and other surfaces

How we work

From survey to finished surface

  1. 1

    Free site survey

First we see the site in person, measure it and ask what you need it for. You are not tied to anything.

  2. 2

    Written quote

Each part of the job is priced on paper before we begin, so the total holds no surprises later.

  3. 3

    Groundwork and preparation

We remove soil to the depth required, compact a new sub-base and set the edgings and drainage.

  4. 4

    Laying and compaction

Tarmac goes down by machine when space allows and is compacted to give an even surface that stands up to use.

  5. 5

    Sign-off and clear-up

The last step is a walk-round with you, after which every bit of waste goes with us.

FAQs

Tarmac Surfacing FAQs

Is tarmac suitable for a sloped site?

Tarmac handles sloped ground well, so a gradient need not rule it out. The real question is drainage. We set the falls to carry water away from buildings, and if the land tilts towards them, a channel or gully takes the runoff. For school grounds, estates or business premises in Godalming, that means water is managed before it reaches doorways and the paths people use every day.

Can you match into an existing tarmac surface?

Yes. Any loose or crumbling edge on the old surface is cut away to a firm line, and the new tarmac is tied into it, so the join stays tight rather than lifting. It lets you extend a yard, rebuild part of a car park or add an access while keeping the surrounding surface.

How thick should a tarmac surface be?

It should be matched to the heaviest vehicle. Tarmac is built in layers: compacted sub-base, binder course and surface course. The depth of each goes up with load, so a footpath needs far less than a service road or a yard for lorries. British Standards set minimum thicknesses per mix. When tarmac sinks where heavy wheels sit, a weak sub-base is usually behind it. We set out the build-up for your site's traffic in the quote.

How soon can I use it after laying?

Most surfaces can take traffic within 24 to 48 hours, with weather and layer depth deciding the exact point, and we confirm your timings before starting, which helps you plan closures and deliveries. It keeps curing for weeks, particularly in warm weather. Early on, vehicles should avoid turning their wheels while stationary, and jacks, stands, skips and other point loads should be kept off.

Do you offer coloured tarmac?

Yes. Red and other coloured tarmacs can be laid where a plain black surface is not wanted, for instance to pick out a walkway or play space in Godalming school grounds or around business premises. Bring it up at the survey and we will show you what is available.

Do we need planning permission to tarmac a yard, forecourt or car park?

That depends on size and drainage. Permitted development rights in Part 7, Class E normally let qualifying commercial premises lay up to 50 m² of new hard surface, so long as it is porous or drains to a permeable area. Listed buildings fall outside the allowance, while schools and industrial premises each have their own class. This is a general outline, not legal advice, so check with the council.

Can you lay tarmac over an existing concrete or tarmac surface?

Yes, so long as what is underneath is sound. A firm concrete or tarmac base can be resurfaced without a full dig-out, and national guides estimate savings of as much as 30 to 40%. If the old surface is breaking up or moving, any overlay will crack and sink with it, so excavation is needed. Each mix also has a minimum thickness. We inspect the existing base at survey and tell you straight.

Is tarmac cheaper than block paving, resin or concrete for a commercial site?

For most surfaces, yes. National price guides put the cost per square metre of tarmac below resin bound, block paving and concrete, with gravel cheaper still. Guides do not agree on figures, so compare quotes on the same area with the same groundwork. Then think about lifespan and upkeep: block paving lasts roughly 20 to 30 years but needs more maintenance, and tarmac looks plainer, is non-porous and may dull.

How much does tarmac surfacing cost in Godalming?

Godalming prices depend on the site, so we come and look before quoting. Size and shape, the vehicles the surface must carry, how much digging and sub-base the ground needs, one or two layers, access for machinery, edging, drainage and waste removal all play a part. A new crossover adds a council fee. After the free survey you receive a clear, itemised written quote with no obligation.

Can tarmac be laid in the rain or in winter?

In light rain, yes, but not on standing water, ice or snow, which the British Standard for laying asphalt rules out. Low temperatures are the other concern: tarmac has to be rolled while hot, and thin surface layers cool fastest on cold, windy days. Guides advise against laying in heavy rain or with ground temperature below 5°C. We confirm the timings for your site with you in advance.

How long does a tarmac surface last, and why do some break up early?

Guides put a typical tarmac life at around 15 years, or 15 to 20 years and longer when maintained. Early failures such as crumbling, pitting, sinking, lifting round covers or ponding usually trace to thin layers, a poorly compacted sub-base or open seams. We counter those by excavating to depth, compacting each layer and laying a base and surface course rolled hot, with British Standards materials.
