Overview

Tarmac Surfacing in Camberley

Looking to have tarmac laid in Camberley? London Tar works throughout Camberley and across all of Surrey.

Tarmac gives you a durable, affordable surface for almost anywhere people walk or drive. In Camberley we lay it for footpaths and private roads, playgrounds and school grounds, yards and hardstanding, with materials to British Standards and plant chosen to give a level, smooth finish.

Speed is one of its strengths: it is laid quickly and can normally carry traffic in a day or two. It also costs less per square metre than block paving or resin. For sites under heavier use, we put down a base course and then a surface course, rolling the tarmac hot to make it dense and even, and finishing neatly against kerbs, buildings and existing surfaces. The preparation underneath decides how good the finish is, so excavation goes to the correct depth and every layer is compacted before the surface course.

What’s included

  • Site cleared and dug out to depth
  • Sub-base compacted to suit the traffic it will carry
  • Rolled base and surface courses, laid by machine
  • Neatly finished edges where the tarmac meets existing surfaces

FAQs

Tarmac Surfacing FAQs

Is tarmac suitable for a sloped site?

Yes, slopes are no obstacle for tarmac. What needs planning is the water. Falls are designed so rain flows away from your buildings, and if the natural slope runs towards them, a drainage channel is fitted to catch it. On a Camberley yard or forecourt, that keeps entrances and loading areas clearer of standing water, and it fits planning rules that look for runoff to reach a permeable area.

Can you match into an existing tarmac surface?

Yes. We trim the existing tarmac back to a firm edge and tie the new layer into it, so the joint holds tight and does not lift as vehicles cross it. It means a car park extension, a new access or a replaced section of yard can join what is already there cleanly.

How thick should a tarmac surface be?

Heavier vehicles need a deeper build. Tarmac goes down in layers, compacted sub-base first, then binder course, then surface course, and the depth of each depends on what drives over it. Staff cars need less than vans; refuse lorries and HGVs need much more. Each mix has a British Standards minimum. A yard sinking under parked trailers or lorries usually has a failed sub-base. Tell us your vehicles and your quote will list the build-up.

How soon can I use it after laying?

Usually after 24 to 48 hours, weather and layer thickness permitting, and we fix the exact timings with you beforehand so you can brief staff and reroute deliveries. Full hardening takes weeks, and warm weather slows it. Until then, ask drivers not to turn the steering wheel while stationary, as power steering can scuff fresh tarmac, and keep jacks, stands and skips off the surface.

Do you offer coloured tarmac?

Yes. Red tarmac and other colours are available whenever black would look too plain. On a Camberley site that might be a pedestrian route, a playground or an area you want marked out from the traffic lanes. The options can be shown to you during the survey.

Do we need planning permission to tarmac a yard, forecourt or car park?

Only in some cases. Qualifying commercial premises can usually lay up to 50 m² of new hard surface under Part 7, Class E permitted development, on condition that it is porous or drains into a permeable area. The allowance does not extend to listed buildings, and separate classes apply to industrial premises and to schools. As general guidance rather than legal advice, check with the council first.

Can you lay tarmac over an existing concrete or tarmac surface?

It can be done if the old surface is firm and stable. Overlaying saves on excavation, and national price guides put that saving at up to 30 to 40%. A base that is cracked through, moving or sinking needs to come out, because the new layer will copy its faults. British Standards also set a minimum thickness per mix. During the survey we check the base and tell you honestly what it needs.

Is tarmac cheaper than block paving, resin or concrete for a commercial site?

Usually it is. National price guides show tarmac costing less per square metre than concrete, block paving or resin bound, and more than gravel. Figures between guides vary, so ask for quotes on an identical area and sub-base. Think about the long term too: block paving lasts around 20 to 30 years but takes more upkeep, while tarmac is less decorative, non-porous and can fade over time.

How much does tarmac surfacing cost in Camberley?

Every Camberley job is priced individually after a free survey. The main cost drivers are area and shape, the traffic it will carry, access for machinery, depth of dig-out and sub-base, the number of layers, edging and kerbs, drainage and waste removal. If you need a new crossover, the council fee is extra. National guides also note higher prices around London. You get an itemised written quote, so you can see what each part costs.

Can tarmac be laid in the rain or in winter?

Light rain is generally workable. Standing water, ice or snow are not: the British Standard bars laying in those conditions. Cold weather causes problems too, since tarmac must be compacted hot and thin top layers lose heat quickly on windy days. Industry price guides advise against laying in heavy rain or below 5°C ground temperature. Timings for your site are confirmed with you before work begins.

How long does a tarmac surface last, and why do some break up early?

National price guides suggest around 15 years, extending to 15 to 20 years or more when it is maintained. Early break-up has familiar causes: a shallow or poorly compacted sub-base, one thin layer instead of two, and badly sealed joints, which show as crumbling, pitting, sinking or ponding. Our approach tackles each: correct excavation depth, compaction at every layer, and a base and surface course rolled hot.
